How it plays
Reconstruct
Each case is a file, its source records and a stub reading DENIED. Cross-reference them and find the fact the model acted on.
Compose
Choose the reason code and attach the exact lines that prove it. Wrong reasons come back as appeals.
Sign, or refuse
If the reason is there, sign it in your name. If it's monstrous, it's still true. If there's none, invent one or refuse and pay for it.
Who it's for
Deduction fans
No combat and no meters. Just documents, a clock and your signature. The answers are hidden in the file, not checked against a list.
Story players
The model gets retrained mid-campaign, and the denials start making a shape the paperwork never names.

Questions
What kind of game is Adverse Action?
Adverse Action is a single-player paperwork thriller and deduction game for Windows on Steam. You work at a desk that has to write the legally required reason behind each automated denial: read the printed file, find the fact the scoring model acted on, cite the exact lines and sign.
Is Adverse Action a document inspection game?
Yes. Every case in Adverse Action is solved by reading and cross-referencing documents: a case file, its source records and a stub reading DENIED, all rendered as dot-matrix printout on greenbar paper. The answer is hidden in the file, not checked against a list.
Is Adverse Action like Papers, Please?
Adverse Action shares the desk, the documents and the moral pressure of Papers, Please. The difference is that you are not checking whether papers are valid. A machine has already decided, and your job is to reconstruct and sign its reason, including when the reason is cruel or missing.
What other games are like Adverse Action?
Players of paperwork and deduction games such as Papers, Please, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Roottrees Are Dead and Her Story will recognise parts of Adverse Action: the desk and the moral squeeze, deduction from evidence, cross-referencing records, and a story assembled one document at a time.
How long is Adverse Action?
Adverse Action takes about five to six hours to reach a first ending, across eighteen shifts. There are multiple endings and an endless mode called THE BACKLOG for after the story.
Is there an Adverse Action demo?
Yes. Adverse Action has a free demo on its Steam store page.
How much does Adverse Action cost and where can I get it?
Adverse Action costs $12.99 USD on Steam for Windows. It has been in Early Access since 27 August 2026 and supports Steam Cloud saves and 17 Steam achievements. The soundtrack is available separately.
Does Adverse Action have combat or a timer?
Adverse Action has no combat. Each shift runs on a clock, and wrong or refused reasons cost you shift time and go on your record.
Also from Quiet Machines: Fork Bomb, a programming game where your code copies itself.
